| INSTITUTIONAL/NONPROFIT NYC Department of Sanitation Recycling Division |

| When the NYC Department of Sanitation Recycling Division called us, they already had created a visual look with an ad agency; consisting of a color scheme and a font choice. We had to work within the confines of these parameters, but we wanted to contribute as much as we could to what we felt was an important issue for all of us.
The first thing we noticed was that the Department had never photographed the different items to recycle separately, so the first thing we did was photograph the recycling items so an audiece could clearly see them. We offered a more playful approach to what others thought of as "garbage" and wthin the limitations, we were able to create bus shelter posters (top two posters) as well as brochures and direct mail. Suggesting that the items be shown individually is example of what a thinking designer can offer to a simple project. Sounds so obvious now, but at the very dawn of NYC recycling, it was a new idea. |
